[ i don't know any of these locations anymore but leng feng can befound wandering around, radiating curiosity. oh and it's not in his icons but he looks like this.
As part of the crew... [ he shrugs. ] We worked on the sets, mostly. Took care of everyone who's "cancelled," wrote fan letters... Whatever we thought would help make it a good show.
We were supposed to be encouraging all of you or something like that, I don't know. I was never very good at it. Turns out fans are kind of crazy. Did they tell you one tried to send a patch of skin?
...I guess it does kind of come across that way. There were actual fan letters, at least, but I think they were trying to filter them? That's why we got a bunch of them that time. Maybe that's why they asked us to do it.
Well, I also think it was strange for us to get our fan mail during the show at all. Isolation from outside comment is more common in Reality shows. So I guess they just like to do things in their own unique way, here.
Yes. That way they can use communications from home as a reward, and keep the players from otherwise being influenced. But it's good that's not how things worked here, since it worked in our favor.
Everything has been so messy and so cruel that it's hard to imagine a tidy miracle at the end. Besides, doesn't it negate the whole point of a contest...?
If it fails, it won't be any different than the other seasons. Worst case scenario, you're sent home with nothing to show for it, or you join the crew like we did and have to work for a while.
How does that work? You just work for a season or two and they give you one? Or do you have to pull off something big, like what we're aiming for here?
No, it's a lot more than a season or two. I think exactly how long it is depends on how well each season goes, but we have to work our way up the ladder - becoming a host is supposed to be the last step before you're done and you get what you came for.
...Or, supposedly, we work on a season that's miraculously better than all the rest, and everyone on that show, cast and crew, all get their wishes granted.
Yeah, none of that was supposed to happen. Apparently production's gotten really sloppy this time around.
[ pauses with a blip of surprise. ]
...Not long before my season started, I learned that my clan's declared war on an enemy we probably can't defeat. I've been thinking of using it to wish for peace for all demons in my world, so we don't have to.
I don't know. I didn't even realize there were laws like that.
[ what do you mean intergalactic laws. what is a galaxy. ]
Maybe. I do wonder sometimes if it's worth it, though. Even if dying here isn't permanent, it feels like it's... taking advantage of people's suffering, and I don't like that.
... When you want something unrealistic, you have to make sacrifices. I don't like that this place takes advantage of people who are desperate for something that they can't achieve any other way.
But... the alternative would be that they can't achieve it any way at all, for some wishes. No matter what they would be willing to give up. And I don't know if that's right, either.
Oh, trust me, I hate that part, too. That's the part that made me want to destroy the whole company. The wishes themselves aren't bad, it's just how they dangle them in front of us like they do.
But I think if this place is able to make these wishes happen, then they can't be the only ones who could. What it would look like without them, though... I don't know.
I keep trying to rationalize it. Like maybe this is the only way it works, for some reason. But I just don't know enough to be sure of that, and that makes it hard to sympathize with anyone but my peers.
I can understand that. Because if there is some other way, why bother forcing people to be miserable at all. And then to call that entertainment is... twisted.
Usually people call me naive for it. [ wryly. ] But I hope it's true, too. Even if people come here out of desperation, I don't want to believe that there's no way to help ourselves at all.

Hey! Lady Akane, isn't it?

"Lady" sounds a little too formal, but that's right.

It's just polite, but if you don't like it, that's fine, too. But it's nice to meet you! I'm Leng Feng - part of the crew.
no subject
I guess I don't mind it too much if it's more comfortable for you. And of course, it's nice to meet you too.
[ hmms. ]
So—what do you do as part of the crew?

Can I ask—what do you intend to wish for?

... I see. I think wishing for peace is a really admirable wish. Something like that—it makes sense to work for it at a job like this.

Then again, it's a little depressing if there really is no other way for miracles to exist...

But I don't want think that way. Things will work out. If not with a wish, then by our own power.

But I've always been here as a matter of convenience. If this doesn't work out, I can still do what needs to be done.

[ that's kind of his own situation at home and it leaves a bad taste in his mouth. ]
...That's good, though. That you don't have to rely on this going well.

I wouldn't think of it as powerless. Just... some problems are big, you know?

Maybe. Depends on what the problem is.

Still, it's sad to think that there are some situations where the best option is to just give up.
no subject
Everyone will decide for themselves. But I do think that's another reason many of us are here - because giving up isn't an option.
