They really made the trial much messier than it had to be, didn't they? Not wanting to lose a team member is one thing, but they went a little too far...
I have to wonder how much he really thought it through. I mean... I don't agree with it at all, taking the fall for someone else is screwed up no matter how much you care about them, but... if he'd really wanted it to work, he should've spoken up earlier, tried to make the explanation more plausible... anything more.
But I don't see how it's worth hurting the people he was trying to save, either.
Pure desperation, is what it was. He waited because we get antsy and panicky at the end, and he thought if he didn't leave time to find a different answer, it might work.
